If you’re the parent of a young child, you may be wondering if having pets is even a possibility. Large dogs seem like too much work, a horse seems impossible and a snake seems too foreign. You may be wondering, “what is the best pet for a small child?” The good news is that there are several pets for small children that are gentle and easy to manage.

Rabbits

Rabbits are fluffy and tend to be non-aggressive, making them a great choice for a young child. Children can learn to feed, hold and take care of a rabbit appropriately without putting them in harm’s way. Your child would likely find their rabbit cute and adorable, making them attached to them. Your child can also play with a rabbit just like they might a cat or dog.

Small Dogs

Although a large dog may seem terrifying for a small child, a small dog can be a great companion. A small dog can allow your child to get a sense for caring for a dog without having the responsibility of a large dog yet. Many small dogs are cuddly and non-aggressive. Your child can feed, pet and walk a dog just like the might with any other dog.

Cats

Cats are another gentle way to introduce your child to having a pet. Cats tend to be lower maintenance than many other animals as they can be trained to use a litter box. Although they don’t mind being around humans, many cats don’t need the level of attention and care that a dog might require. As a result, a cat can introduce your young child to having a pet without giving them tons of responsibility just yet.

Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs are another low-maintenance and non-threatening pet for your small child. Their tiny size and fluffy bodies make them ideal for small hands to hold them. Your child can be in charge of feeding and playing with their guinea pig all in the safety of a small cage.

If you’re interested in a pet for your small children, there are many safe and friendly options, such as a cat, rabbit or small dog.
